RANGA SHANKARA :
PIONEERING THEATRE AS PRAXIS
- Shreya Sajeev

Ranga Shankara, a theatre based in Bangalore, is a space for showcasing plays of all languages, with artistes from all around the world performing in them. It came into being as envisaged by theatre actress, Arundathi Nag, as a tribute to her late husband, Shankar Nag, one of the beloved actors of the Kannada Film Industry.

It opened in 2004, and since then, the theatre's policy of at least 'one show a day' except for Mondays has garnered and nurtured a community of theatre lovers in the city over the years. As cinema, which was erstwhile the art for the masses, shifted to expensive multiplexes over the last decade, this space has certainly brought about a revival for theatre in the city. The aesthetics of the space is a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, with elements of classical south Indian architecture and the Western avante-garde.

The theatre has an in-house bookshop run by Sankars, with a wide range of books that cater to the most eclectic needs of theatre and performance lovers.

Their Cafeteria, with expansive varieties of delicacies, ranging from regional dishes like Appam and Stew to continental dishes like Alfredo pasta, enables the audience to enhance their experience in the food front. It helps that the delicacies served here are extremely reasonably priced and help fuel the endless intellectual discussions that Rangashankara invariably stimulates!
